The function of the painted wooden object ranges from the practical to the profound. These objects can perform utilitarian tasks, convey artistic fantasy, connote noble aspirations, and embody the highest spiritual expressions. For some, it's simply a matter of giving an old but still functional table or chair a new look. Those of us familiar with the history of the decorative arts know, however, that painted furniture can be much more than just the result of a makeover. For centuries, carvers and cabinetmakers have further embellished their creations with decorative designs on paint. Examples of this art form can be found in many parts of Asia and continental Europe, as well as England and the New World.
